A Crown Prosecution Service Community Prosecutor spent Friday night in London’s West End in a bid to raise awareness of domestic violence and homophobic crime among the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.
Hywel Ebsworth, of Haringey CPS, visited pubs, shops and cafes that are known to have patrons from the LGBT community along with representatives from Haringey’s LGBT network and Domestic Violence forum. He dropped off information leaflets about domestic violence and spoke to staff about the role of the CPS in tackling homophobic and transphobic crime.
The Community Prosecutor approach is a new initiative making CPS prosecutors more visible in the communities where they work. With more information about the impact of crimes on a community, prosecutors can help find the best solutions with other criminal justice partners. Community Prosecutors are set to take part in local events across England and Wales from now on, building on existing CPS community engagement work.
Community Prosecutor Hywel Ebsworth said: "Some members of the LGBT community may be reluctant to come forward if they are a victim of domestic violence or a homophobic crime but I am meeting people in a bid to encourage them to do so."
"The Crown Prosecution Service regards homophobic crime as particularly serious because it undermines people’s right to feel safe about their sexual orientation. Such crimes are based on prejudice, discrimination and hate, and they have no place in an open and democratic society."
Mr Ebsworth added that it was important for the LGBT community to have the same access to justice, support and safety from domestic violence as the wider community.
He said: "The CPS is determined to bring perpertrators to justice, and community engagement work like this is vital if we are to increase awareness of prosecutors’ role in protecting the public."
Between April 2008 and March 2009 there were 139 cases of homophobic hate crime in London, with a conviction rate of 74.8 per cent.
The CPS monitors hate crime with annual CPS Hate Crime Reports, which are available on the CPS website.
The Community Prosecutor approach was announced in The Engaging Communities in the Criminal Justice Green Paper earlier this year.
